What to Do If You Get in an ATV Accident

ATVs can be a tremendous amount of fun. They allow you to get out and experience nature in a unique way. For all the fun they offer, they can also be dangerous. Unfortunately, aside from the fun, ATV accidents are fairly common and can result in extensive injury or death. As with any vehicle you operate or adventure you go on, it’s a good idea to know what to do if something goes wrong.

Seek Medical Care

The very first thing you should do if you get in an ATV accident is to seek medical care. Arm and hand injuries are the most common, followed by head and neck, legs and feet, and then the torso. After an accident occurs, you may find that you or someone else needs first-aid care immediately after. Sometimes even though people feel fine or injury free, it is still a good idea to seek medical care. Injuries can be delayed or internal and might not make themselves known right away.

Document the Accident

Documenting the accident as much as possible is another important thing to do in the immediate aftermath. Take pictures of visible injuries on yourself and anyone else involved, the ATV, and the surrounding environment. Obtain the names and contact information of anyone else involved too. And finally, if a police report is filed, get a copy of it as well. This is all important information that the insurance company can use to better understand what happened so you can be taken care of fairly.

File a Claim

If you have ATV insurance, the next thing to do is to file a claim. This is where all that documentation will come in handy. Notify your insurance company of the accident and send in your documentation. If someone else was involved, you may need to contact their insurance company and notify them of the accident as well, especially if you have evidence that proves that the other party was at fault.

Even if you’re confident in your ability to handle an ATV without getting into an accident, it’s still important to know what to do on the off-chance you happened to be in one. You don’t have to be the one who messed up to get in an accident after all. The ATV itself may malfunction or someone else could be at fault. Either way, knowing what to do if you find yourself involved in an ATV accident before you’re in one can make dealing with the aftermath much easier.
