Things Everyone Should Keep in Their Car during Winter

Have you ever gotten stuck in your car during a snowstorm before? If you have, you know how important it is to already have what you need in your car. If you haven’t, that’s great! Don’t assume it won’t ever happen to you though. There’s no time like the present to prepare just in case.

Things to Handle Snow

If you get stuck in the winter, it’s usually because of snow. Sometimes having the right things on hand makes it possible for you to get yourself unstuck instead of having to wait for someone else to help you. Keep a bag of non-clumping kitty litter, sand, or road salt on hand that you can put in front of your tires if you get stuck. That creates more traction which could help you get your car unstuck. Keep a snow shovel and ice scraper on hand as well.

Things to Stay Warm

You can’t always get your car unstuck, so you have to prepare to stay stuck for a while. Keep things in your car that you can use to stay warm while you wait. Extra winter clothes, blankets, and boots are a great place to start. Waterproof matches are another great emergency supply inclusion. They can provide a little extra warmth and light when you need them. Just make sure you have a safe place to put them when they go out.

Things to Care for Your Car

Sometimes your car needs some extra help and care. Make sure you have jumper cables, a flashlight (with working batteries), reflective triangles, and a basic toolkit in your car before you leave. Consider keeping a tow strap, an empty gas can, road flares, and tire chains in your car during the winter as well. These things can help you get your car running again, keep it from getting stuck, or make it easier to get unstuck. If that doesn’t work, you can at least improve how visible you are to others, making it easier to find you and avoid hitting you.

The last thing you want is to get stuck in your car during a snowstorm without the things you need to make it through. Non-perishable food and water are a given. It doesn’t hurt to have a cell phone charger or first aid kit either. Hauling everything with you whenever you drive in the winter might seem like overkill, but you’ll be glad you did if you ever get stuck and have to wait for a while for help.
